Dark Chocolate s Polyphenols: Proven to Lower Bad Cholesterol and Boost Good HDL

Research from the University of Hull, published in Diabetic Medicine, reveals that dark chocolate—rich in polyphenols—can effectively combat high cholesterol.

Scientists tested 12 participants with type 2 diabetes, a group often battling elevated cholesterol. Over 16 weeks, they consumed dark chocolate bars, with some fortified with extra polyphenols.

The results were clear: Those eating the fortified chocolate saw significant improvements. Bad LDL cholesterol dropped, while good HDL cholesterol rose.

A word of caution
While polyphenols offer cholesterol benefits, dark chocolate is still high in fats and sugars. Experts stress moderation to avoid excess calorie intake.
