Blood donors in Q fever risk areas will be screened for the bacteria starting Monday, March 15. Sanquin, the national blood supply organization, announced this proactive measure to protect recipients.
If Q fever bacteria is detected in a blood donor, they will be temporarily deferred from donating. The contamination risk is low, but Sanquin prioritizes utmost safety.
This specialized test identifies the bacterium at an early stage. Sanquin is acting ahead of formal Health Council guidance to minimize any potential risks.
"It's essential that patients receive safe blood," a Sanquin spokesperson emphasized.
