4 Mom-Tested Tips to Soothe Infant Colic: What Worked for My Baby

As a new mom, I relied on massages, babywearing, and herbal teas to ease my infant's colic. These tips were tested and approved by my son just months ago.

Infant colic is tough on everyone involved.

Before accepting endless crying as inevitable, try these effective strategies recommended by experts like my midwife and pediatrician.

1. Midwife-Recommended Belly Massages

Even before my baby arrived, our midwife taught us this technique: Lay baby on their back with legs bent toward the tummy, then guide clockwise movements to massage the stomach with their knees.

After just a few minutes, my little one's cries subsided noticeably.

You can also use your hand, though the pressure from their legs is more effective.

2. Carry Baby in the Crook of Your Arm or a Sling

Positioning baby tummy-down in the crook of your arm, head supported in your hand, and pacing the house often works wonders.

The gentle arm pressure massages their belly, while the support reassures them.

For longer relief—especially with a growing baby—try a sling for close contact and soothing rocking from your movements.

3. Herbal Teas for Breastfeeding Moms

While breastfeeding during colic episodes, I sipped linden and chamomile teas daily. Their calming, digestive properties passed through my milk, providing my baby much-needed relief.

4. Probiotics: My Pediatrician's Recommendation

Our pediatrician suggested probiotics to support my baby's developing digestive system. We saw quick improvements, making other remedies secondary.

Just three drops daily for three to four weeks did the trick. Store in the fridge, as they're live organisms.

At €3–€6 per bottle, it's affordable—ours was mostly covered by insurance after a small reimbursement from social security.

Colic typically resolves by 3–4 months as the gut matures. If you have more tips, share in the comments!
