A reliable face mask is essential for protecting yourself and others from COVID-19. As experienced DIY enthusiasts, we've perfected this no-sew method using everyday items. It's quick, cost-effective, and beginner-friendly—no sewing machine required.
What You'll Need
- A piece of cotton fabric (at least 25cm diameter for adults)
- Pair of scissors
- Thread and needle
- 2 rubber bands or elastic pieces (20cm for adults)
- Iron
- Small metal rod or straw
- A plate (25-28cm for adults)
Step-by-Step Guide
- Place the plate upside down on the fabric and trace around it with a marker.
- Cut along the traced line to create a circle.
- Fold the circle in half to form a semicircle.
- Fold the semicircle in half again.
- With scissors, cut along each folded edge to create four triangles with rounded bases.
- Take two triangles, overlap them, thread the needle, and hand-sew the rounded edges together. Cut the thread.
- Repeat with the other two triangles to make a second "hat" shape.
- Flip one hat so the fabric design faces out.
- Layer the second hat on top to double the mask thickness.
- Align edges and sew around, leaving ½ cm open at one end.
- Turn the mask right-side out through the opening, like a sock.
- Smooth and shape the mask, then iron the edges flat.
- Fold the side edges inward to form casings for the elastics.
- Sew the folds, leaving space to thread the elastic. Repeat on the other side.
- Cut elastics in half if needed, then use the metal rod to thread through each casing.
- Tie knots at elastic ends and tuck into the casings.
