A comprehensive study of 1,763 adults reveals a clear association between high levels of celebrity obsession and lower scores on cognitive tests. However, researchers caution that it's unclear whether this fascination causes or results from reduced cognitive skills.

For nearly two decades, research has yielded mixed findings on the connection between celebrity worship and cognitive abilities. Some studies suggest that higher celebrity worship correlates with diminished cognitive performance, while others find no link.

Published in BMC Psychology, a recent study builds on prior work by applying Cattell's two-factor theory of intelligence to a sample of Hungarian adults.

Clear Association Emerges

Researchers recruited 1,763 participants (about two-thirds men, one-third women) for an online survey. Participants completed two intelligence subtests: a vocabulary test and a short digit symbol test. They also responded to the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale and the Celebrity Attitude Scale to assess their level of celebrity obsession.

The Celebrity Attitude Scale categorized obsession into three levels: "social entertainment" (casual discussions with friends), "intense-personal" (compulsive thinking about celebrities), and "borderline-pathological" (willingness to do anything for a favorite celebrity).

Participants also provided data on subjective material wealth, current family income, and socio-demographics.

The exact mechanism remains elusive. Authors suggest that maintaining a one-sided emotional bond with celebrities demands intense focus, potentially impairing cognition. Smarter individuals may also be less prone to idolization, better recognizing the marketing strategies that elevate celebrities.
