As public health experts emphasize, wearing a face mask remains one of the most effective ways to curb SARS-CoV-2 transmission, even after nearly a year of pandemic life. Yet, a recent survey reveals widespread errors that undermine their protection.
The COVID-19 pandemic has reshaped daily life worldwide with measures like curfews, lockdowns, and business closures. Among these changes, mask-wearing stands out as the most visible symbol. Alongside social distancing and hand hygiene, masks are a proven barrier against virus spread. However, a Signs.com survey of 1,000 U.S. adults uncovers troubling habits: 35% don't wash hands before donning a mask, 43.7% skip it before removal, and 31.9% never wash their face afterward.
Even more concerning, some share masks with family members – essentially swapping bodily fluids during a pandemic. Fabric masks can be lent only after thorough washing, yet many neglect regular cleaning. As we've noted before, reusing a dirty mask offers less protection than none at all.
Storage matters too: Keep clean masks in a safe, untouched spot. Place washable ones in a plastic bag until laundering, and dispose of single-use masks immediately in the trash. The survey highlights a clear lack of these essential protocols.
Finally, positioning the mask under the nose defeats its purpose entirely – it doesn't restrict breathing when worn properly over nose and mouth, ensuring protection for you and others.
