As France eases COVID-19 lockdown restrictions, recent studies highlight notable health shifts: over half the population gained weight, while sexual activity declined markedly among adults.
Lockdown lifestyles contributed to weight gain for many French adults. An Ifop study (PDF in French) commissioned by Darwin Nutrition, released May 7, 2020, found 57% reported gaining weight due to reduced physical activity and increased snacking. On average, those affected added 2.5 kg.
The survey polled 3,045 demographically representative French adults via online questionnaire from April 24-27, 2020. Notably, 56% of men gained an average 2.7 kg, and 58% of women gained 2.3 kg since confinement began on March 17. Interestingly, 33% felt more mindful of balanced eating, though 29% lost weight.
Confinement also dampened bedroom activity for many. An Ifop poll from May 5, 2020, for Charles.co—an online sexology platform—surveyed the same 3,045 respondents. Results showed 44% had no sexual intercourse during lockdown, up from 26% pre-confinement. Singles reported 87% abstinence versus 21% for those in relationships. Masturbation persisted, particularly among men.
These trends align with surges in sedentary pursuits like streaming films/series and gaming, which rose 38% in France during March 23-29, 2020. Deconfinement starting May 11, 2020, offered much-needed relief.
