Researchers at Memorial University of Newfoundland in Canada have found that walking at your own pace is the most efficient way to burn fat. Their human study pinpointed optimal fat oxidation methods, revealing that self-selected walking speeds deliver the highest lipid (fat) energy production per distance traveled—outperforming prescribed paces.
This research addresses a key barrier: rigidly prescribed exercise often feels unappealing due to strict schedules and delayed rewards. "Our results show that optimizing fat oxidation doesn't require a complex, restrictive program," explains Fabien Basset, PhD, the study's corresponding author.
Regular self-paced walking supports long-term health by helping reduce risks of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and more.
