As experts in sleep health, we've analyzed a Swiss Sense survey of 1,000 Dutch adults conducted for World Sleep Day (March 13, 2020). It shows sleep is paramount for 91.3%, with 54.2% choosing a good night's rest over sex. Notably, 32% have dreamed of intimacy with someone other than their partner—often an ex or colleague.
Would you choose sleep or sex?
When asked if they prefer a good night's sleep over sex, 54.2% agreed. Women lead at 61.4%, compared to 47.1% of men. Younger adults under 34 prioritize sleep most (60%), while 50.9% of those over 55 do the same.
4 in 10 men would trade sleep for sex
Conversely, 43% of men would sacrifice sleep for passionate sex, versus just 22.3% of women—highlighting women's stronger attachment to rest. Meanwhile, 55.7% enjoy sex but won't trade sleep for it, and 11.8% need intimacy to unwind and sleep well.
Sleep is highly valued
An overwhelming 91.3% deem sleep very important, with women at 93.6% and men at 88.9%. Yet, 11.9% dislike sleep, rising to 14.5% among men.
Nearly one-third dream of sex outside their relationship
Common dreams include falling (42.7%) and being chased (38.2%). Third is sex with someone else (32% overall; top for men at 33.6%, third for women at 30.4%).
Dreams often feature colleagues
Romantic dreams commonly involve colleagues (22.2% men, 11.6% women), ex-partners, or celebrities.
