Recent research reveals that good and bad moods can spread through friendship networks, much like certain depression symptoms such as feelings of helplessness and loss of interest. However, the influence of friends' poorer moods isn't strong enough to drive others into clinical depression. Researchers drew these insights from a long-term study tracking participants' moods and social connections.
Using advanced mathematical modeling, the team showed that surrounding yourself with friends who have low moods increases your own risk of persistent low mood and hinders recovery. The reverse holds true for those with upbeat social circles, fostering resilience and positivity.
