Heidi lives with me in Schijndel. I know her mainly by sight—her children attend school with my daughter, and I've seen her around there in the past. Recently, I learned through local news that Heidi is chronically ill with multiple sclerosis (MS). She's far from alone in this struggle, but her story deeply resonated with me.
Perhaps because she's from our village, or because she's a mother to children the same age as mine. Whatever the reason, stories like hers put everything into perspective. That's why I believe they deserve to be shared. I asked Heidi if she'd share her experience of living with chronic illness as a family anchor, and she graciously agreed.
And she has...
What strikes me most is how Heidi's dreams differ from mine—and likely those of many mothers. What I take for granted is, for her, a distant hope of ever happening again.
Heidi's outlook is uncertain now that she's chronically ill with MS. This is especially true within the Dutch medical system, where the most advanced treatments aren't available.
But there is hope.
Recently, Heidi learned of a way to improve her prognosis: Haematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation (HSCT). Worldwide, about 70 clinics offer some form of HSCT.
She can pursue treatment in Mexico, where the average recovery rate is around 80%. Timing is critical—the sooner she undergoes it, the better, as disease progression reduces chances.
Here's the hurdle: These treatments aren't covered by Dutch health insurance. Heidi needs to raise €70,000 to seize this opportunity and secure a brighter future for her family.
Like most of us, I don't have €70,000 readily available. But small contributions from many can add up to make a real difference.
Can you spare a little to support Heidi? No amount is too small—together, we can help her reclaim her future.
She needs all the support possible. Don't hold back thinking she's 'already' at 25% funded—if we all do, she won't reach her goal. For those hesitant, watch this video and listen to the music; it may inspire you to act.
Heidi has established a foundation to fund her treatment. I admire her vulnerability in sharing publicly to fight for her family's future.
