Concave or Convex Belly Button? Understanding Your Navel s Shape

Your belly button is simply a scar from the umbilical cord after birth. What's the shape of yours?

Just like toe shapes vary among family members, belly buttons differ too. The two main types—concave (innie) or convex (outie)—have one clear majority.

The Common Dimple

Most people have a concave belly button, often called an innie or dimple. Only a small percentage have a convex one that protrudes slightly. Contrary to the old wives' tale, the shape isn't determined by how the umbilical cord was cut at birth—it has no impact. Medical experts attribute this to simple anatomical variation, much like a prominent nose or larger ears.

An Erogenous Zone

Interestingly, the belly button and clitoris develop from the same embryonic tissue. Stimulating your navel can produce sensations in the genital area, making it an erogenous zone for many women. Some opt for piercings to enhance this, though convex navels are trickier to pierce than concave ones.
