Upper arms

Statistics vary, but it is thought that about 40 percent of people suffer from keratosis pilaris. The most common spot is on the back of the upper arms, but you can also get it on your legs, back, buttocks, or cheeks. People with allergies or eczema are more likely to suffer from keratosis pilaris.

What can you do against keratosis pilaris?

You don't have to be ashamed of it and it isn't dangerous either. However, it can be very annoying, because you yourself may have the feeling that the bumps are unsightly. Keratosis pilaris cannot be cured, but it can be reduced with proper care.

  1. Use an exfoliant, such as salicylic acid or fruit acid (AHA or BHA).
  2. Some brands release special products to reduce keratosis pilaris. This cream from Paula's Choice, for example.
  3. Scrubbing or scrubbing too hard can make your skin problem worse, but some people do benefit from scrubbing gently, with a mild scrub or a washcloth. Don't scrub too hard, chances are you'll irritate your skin. Find out what works for you.
  4. When your skin is dry, you will generally suffer more from it. Lubricate your skin after showering and possibly use a slightly oilier cream more often than you are used to.
  5. Do not scratch the bumps or dry spots.
  6. If you suffer from keratosis pilaris, you can consult your doctor for advice.
