How many cups of coffee do you drink daily? Is it too much, and does it vary by individual? Santé magazine breaks it down based on expert insights.
Coffee comes in many forms, and its health impact isn't one-size-fits-all. Certain types contain cafestol and kahweol, compounds that can raise cholesterol. Naturally occurring caffeine provides an energizing boost but may cause restlessness, anxiety, headaches, sleep issues, or temporary blood pressure spikes if overconsumed.
The threshold varies by person, but healthy adults can typically handle up to 400 mg of caffeine daily—roughly four cups—without adverse effects.
If caffeine doesn't agree with you, decaf is an option, though not always ideal. Decaffeination often involves chemicals that leave trace amounts behind, and decaf still packs 2-4 mg per cup.
