Many shopping trolleys are seriously polluted

Shopping carts are about as unsanitary as keyboards.

Research at a hundred supermarkets shows that 84 percent of the shopping carts are seriously soiled. 14 percent is dirty and only 2 percent of the shopping carts are clean. The E.coli bacteria was found on a number of shopping carts.

Hygiene code
The hygiene code of supermarkets states that shopping trolleys must be clean, free of street dirt and product residues. That does not necessarily mean that the vehicles are bacteria-free.

The cleanest shopping trolleys can be found in Friesland. The situation is much less good in Groningen, where the shopping carts are the dirtiest.
