Breaking the Silence: Dutch Artists Confront Anxiety, Depression, and the Taboo of Fear

Artists are human too, facing insecurities and fears like anyone else. In the Netherlands, they experience anxiety and depression at higher rates than other professions. Cabaret artist Marjolijn van Kooten is challenging this stigma with her candid new book, Schijtluis.

Specialized Support for Performing Artists In 2008, psychiatrist Esther van Fenema launched a dedicated outpatient clinic at Leiden University Medical Center for performers struggling with mental health issues. 'Fears in this field can be overwhelming, making artists feel like they're losing their minds or facing death,' she notes. 'Causes vary, but stage fright often stems from deeper psychiatric conditions that need thorough evaluation first.'

Anxiety Can Strike Anyone
One in five Dutch adults grapples with anxiety disorders, yet the topic remains hushed. Marjolijn's book reveals that happiness is possible even with anxiety. She shares her raw experiences with severe fears and depression, alongside insights from celebrities like Sylvia Witteman, René van der Gijp, and Ingmar Heytze.

Schijtluis by Marjolijn van Kooten hits shelves November 7th for €16.95 via Bol.com.
