Marie-Anne is facing another knee surgery soon. 'Does your husband need help?' the municipal officer asks me over the phone.
My question was about getting some assistance with housework or the kids. I don't hesitate: my husband, overhearing, shoots me a frown.
Asking for Help
My partner, a fit 40-something, is never sick. Headaches? Not in his vocabulary. Our family tackles the steepest ski slopes, and in 14 years together, I've heard him say 'tired' maybe twice. Does he need help? Absolutely not. The officer advises solving this 'internally in the marriage.'
Busy Schedule
I explain he's already taken weeks off recently because, after multiple knee surgeries, I couldn't manage our two young children (ages 6 and 8) or the household. Our third daughter is abroad for a year post-graduation. His employer is flexible, but with a packed agenda ahead, more extended leave isn't feasible.
Another Surgery
I tell the rather formal official that in the next two months, I'll undergo surgery on one or both knees, unable to bear weight for six weeks.
The Real Challenges
Cooking on stools is tough. Cleaning up shattered glass from a fallen picture frame is harder when it terrifies your daughter. Comforting a child after a stair tumble, inspecting 34 itchy bumps on her back amid your own pain—while legs elevated on the couch—is exhausting. Navigating stairs on crutches for the tenth time ('My stuffed animal's lost!' or 'Read to me, please'), helping kids shower in a slippery bathroom, and carrying shopping baskets? Nearly impossible.
Grateful but Overwhelmed
Wonderful people have helped before, but I've leaned on them too often. Now, I crave reliable support without imposing—everyone's juggling work, kids, relationships, and social lives. Accepting help doesn't come naturally to me either.
Yes, I Need Help
My husband? No. But damn it, I do. Try explaining that to a civil servant!
