Question: My girlfriend has two large moles on her back. I've urged her to have them removed just to be safe, but she thinks it's unnecessary. She says that as long as hair grows from it, it's a healthy mole. Is she right? — L. DE B., Roermond
Dermatologist Jacqueline Vink answers: In most cases, a mole with a growing hair is indeed benign. However, congenital nevi (moles present from birth) with hair can sometimes degenerate into malignancy over time—especially if they measure a few centimeters across. That said, hairy moles are typically harmless. Feel free to pluck the hair; contrary to myth, it won't turn the mole 'bad.' Whenever in doubt, consult your GP or dermatologist for peace of mind.
