Have you indulged in a McDonald's meal lately? You might think an occasional treat won't hurt, but new research reveals that even a single unhealthy meal can damage your blood vessels.
Whether it's a side of fries from Burger King or a buttery croissant for breakfast, most of us give in to greasy temptations now and then. However, a study from the University of Montreal warns that one meal loaded with saturated fats can negatively impact vascular health.
In contrast, a Mediterranean-style meal rich in healthy fats may actually benefit your blood vessels.
Heart Disease Risk
The research focused on the endothelium—the thin layer of cells lining the inside of blood vessels. Researchers measured how quickly blood vessels dilated after a brief occlusion, just five minutes post-meal. Endothelial function is a key predictor of coronary heart disease risk.
Benefits of Healthy Meals
The study also found that individuals with high triglyceride levels—a type of blood fat—experienced greater improvements in blood vessel function from the Mediterranean meal compared to those with low levels.
