Do you always check the package insert for potential side effects before taking medication? Research reveals that women are more prone to drug side effects than men—with the gap widest for cardiovascular treatments.
Hospital Admissions
Each year, around 7,000 people are hospitalized due to adverse drug reactions. Eline Rodenburg, a researcher at Erasmus MC, examined thousands of such cases. Her analysis showed that one-third involved cardiovascular medications, and women faced a significantly higher risk than men.
Cardiovascular Medications
Nearly half of these side effects stemmed from blood thinners, with a smaller portion linked to drugs for specific heart rhythm disorders.
Notably, women using diuretics (water pills) for high blood pressure carry four times the risk of severe reactions requiring hospitalization.
