Why January Alcohol Detoxes Are Medically Pointless, Experts Explain

Abstaining from alcohol in January to detoxify your liver is medically pointless, according to the British Liver Trust.

Many people try to offset holiday excesses by going alcohol-free for the month. Unfortunately, this approach falls short. Andrew Langford from the British Liver Trust stresses that a quick detox isn't effective for liver protection. Instead, skip alcohol a few days each week year-round.

This cuts overall intake significantly, allowing your liver regular recovery time and preventing permanent damage. Dr. Mark Wright at Southampton General Hospital concurs: a one-month detox is medically ineffective and breeds false security. "It reinforces the myth that you can binge heavily then reset with a quick fix," he notes.
