Organic food might seem like a logical choice, but not for the Dutch. We purchase the least organic products across Europe, according to the European Health & Nutrition study by TNS NIPO.
Despite growing interest in sustainable food, Dutch consumers rarely choose organics. The research highlights animal welfare as a key motivator for buying organic, yet good intentions often falter in practice.

Nearly half of Dutch respondents say they instinctively prefer organic food, but it hasn't become a habit. We're not unique in Europe—Germans and Italians lead, with over a quarter buying organic weekly. In the Netherlands, only a small portion do so.
In other countries, organics are prized for being healthier, tasting better, and benefiting the environment.
When Dutch shoppers do choose organic, it's typically vegetables (51%), eggs (48%), and meat (42%). We largely skip organic sauces (4%) and delicacies (3%).

High Price Barrier
For Europeans, the higher price is the top obstacle. A striking 81% of Dutch say they'd buy more organics if prices dropped. Better availability and supply would also encourage more purchases.
