Researchers at the University Medical Center Groningen have identified a gene that significantly influences human lifespan. Lifespan is partly determined by genetics, and this discovery provides the strongest evidence yet. "For the first time, we have found convincing evidence," says one of the lead scientists.
The UMC Groningen team collaborated with experts from the University of Leicester and King's College London. Their comprehensive findings will be published in the prestigious journal Nature Genetics in 2020.
"This genetic variant partly explains why members of some families live much longer than others," the researcher explains.
