Why I Stopped Buying Refined White Salt – The Healthier Choice of Unrefined Gray Salt

The white table salt we commonly buy has lost its natural benefits. It's pristine and white, but gray salt is far better for your health. So, which should you choose?

Salt has long preserved our food. Today, refining it aims to extend shelf life further. Ironically, salt's hygroscopic nature—due to its valuable trace elements—is what makes it prone to clumping.

Why I Stopped Buying Refined White Salt – The Healthier Choice of Unrefined Gray Salt

Why I Decided to Stop Buying White Salt

1. Refining white salt involves adding chemical additives. Regardless of the brand, the process to achieve that pure white color and long shelf life strips away its natural state, introducing anti-caking agents and other additives.

2. Refining strips away salt's essential minerals. The bright white appearance means vital trace elements like iron, calcium, potassium, manganese, magnesium, zinc, copper, and fluorine have been removed. What's left is mostly sodium chloride—which contributes to salt's health concerns when overconsumed.

3. I now choose unrefined gray salt over white salt. It's slightly pricier due to minimal processing, retaining its gray hue and full spectrum of minerals and trace elements. This makes it a healthier option. As with all salt, consume in moderation.
