Here's how to prevent and relieve sciatica effectively.

The sciatic nerves are the longest in the human body, originating from each side of the spine at the last lumbar vertebra and supplying both legs. Compression of their roots—often from osteoarthritis or a herniated disc—can cause sudden pain. Triggers may include lifting heavy loads, poor posture, incorrect movements, or accidents, with stress and excess weight as additional risk factors.

"The pain can feel dull, tingling, or like an electric shock," explains Caroline Lambert, vice-president of the French Association of Chiropractic (AFC). Don't ignore sciatica to avoid unnecessary suffering and potential permanent nerve damage.

Sedentary Lifestyle: Sciatica's Worst Enemy

For those with spinal vulnerabilities, a healthy lifestyle is key to warding off sciatica. Engage in gentle sports that promote flexibility and strengthen back muscles—sedentary habits are the biggest threat.

In the morning, avoid leaping out of bed. Instead, decompress your intervertebral discs: Lie on your back, draw your knees toward your chest, grasp them with your hands. Inhale as you gently pull them closer to your belly, then exhale to release. Repeat 10 times before rising.

Daily Habits for Sciatica Prevention

Throughout the day, stretch the back of your legs: Stand with one leg straight on a chair, lean your chest forward as if resting on it—without forcing. If seated for work, stand and stretch hourly, elongating your lower back fully.

In the evening, "avoid sleeping on your stomach," advises Pauline Pelletier, functional rehabilitation engineer at the Thermes de Jonzac. Opt for back or side sleeping with a pillow between your knees to keep your pelvis aligned. Choose a pillow that maintains neck alignment with your spine.

Effective Ways to Relieve Sciatica Pain

If pain is manageable, skip bed rest—maintain normal activity while avoiding heavy exertion. For intense pain, start with paracetamol. If ineffective, consult your doctor promptly.

They may recommend corticosteroid injections near the affected nerve root and/or imaging to pinpoint the cause. Reassuringly, even with a herniated disc, surgery is rarely needed—reserved for persistent, debilitating cases as a last resort.

For vertebral misalignments, osteopaths or chiropractors can help, but wait 1-2 days post-onset for inflammation to ease. "Vertebral adjustments pair well with cold therapy to reduce pain," notes Caroline Lambert.

In herbal medicine, harpagophytum (Devil's Claw) eases pain and boosts mobility—take as tea or tablets (3-4 daily for 5 days). For inflammation, dilute wintergreen essential oil in a carrier like arnica or sweet almond oil, then gently massage affected areas.
