Electronic cigarette:a toxic molecule can damage vital organs, researchers announce

As the e-cigarette scandal continues, a new study has emerged. According to the researchers, toxic molecules are present in the vapor of electronic cigarette liquids.

Young people more exposed

The conclusion of the study published in the European Heart Journal on November 13, 2019 will logically disappoint some consumers. According to Prof. Thomas Münzel of the Department of Cardiology at the University Medical Center Mainz (Germany), the electronic cigarette is not a healthy alternative to tobacco.

The risks would be even higher among the youngest. Indeed, the electronic cigarette is much more popular among young people , the fault of marketing that specifically targets them. The fact that the e-cigarette is usually offered as a healthy alternative to tobacco is all the more worrying. It is precisely thisstrong bond with youth which had allowed the governor of the state of New York (United States) to justify his recent decision to ban the sale of flavored electronic cigarettes.

Toxic molecules

In their study, the German researchers say they have identified several molecular mechanisms related to vaping. An experiment was conducted on 151 mice , exposed to steam six times a day for twenty minutes. According to the results, the vapor would cause oxidative stress and inflammation in the lungs, blood vessels and brain. In short, it is about toxic molecules for our cells , generated by the vaporization of liquids.

Another phase of the study was to understand the effects of steam on the brachial arteries about twenty smokers. Remember that these are located in each of the two arms and bring oxygenated blood to the forearms. Thus, vaping even once increases the heart rate and generates a stiffening of the arteries. There is also talk of a dysfunction of their wall, which could ultimately promote the onset of cardiovascular disease.

Scientists do not question past studies suggesting that electronic cigarettes are less harmful than tobacco. However, when the age factor is taken into account , the negative effects could be greater. Finally, the leaders of the study also recalled that the long-term effects of e-cigarettes were still unknown.
