Tips to consider your first day at the gym

Are you planning to get in shape before the summer, and would you like to go to the gym for that? If it's your first time, you'll be much more successful if you know what to ask, look for, and do on that first visit. Here are 10 things to consider on your first day at the gym.

1. Familiarize yourself with the layout of the center (staff, changing rooms, toilets, fitness equipment).

2. Ask the call center agent what services are offered (massage therapy, group fitness, personal training). What is free and what do you have to pay for?

3. Sign up for a fitness equipment orientation to learn how cardio, strength, and other equipment works.

4. Look at the guidelines regarding:clothing, use of electronics and refreshments, time limits and/or registrations for equipment, etc.

5. Schedule a fitness test if offered. Knowing your current physical condition will help you set goals and evaluate future progress.

6. Get to know the gym's patterns and peak times. Note what equipment is being used when you are there. Exercising during the less busy hours can save you time and stress.

7. Understand that people will not judge you. While it's natural to feel nervous for the first time sitting in front of others, the person next to you probably isn't paying attention; they are focused on their own training. Concentrate on your own form, breathing and the muscles that the exercise aims at.

8. Don't overdo it. Gradually work on your exercise, especially if you've been physically inactive for a while or are recovering from an injury. You will not see the results overnight. Being physically active and healthy is a lifelong journey.

9. Find a workout buddy to stay motivated. Maybe someone wants to train with you, a friend or someone who already trains there.

10. Realize that fitness won't make time for you. You have to make time for fitness. What are your goals? How many days a week do you plan to go and for how long?

The gym staff are there to help you, but sometimes you need to start the conversation and let them know you have some questions or need some advice. The most important thing is that you have fun getting fit.
