4 Expert Tips for Safely Returning to the Workplace and Minimizing Virus Risks

As many professionals transition back to office environments, the risk of virus transmission remains. Proper cleaning and disinfection of workstations and home offices is crucial. Research shows SARS-CoV-2 can survive up to 4 days on wooden surfaces like desks and 3 days on plastics such as phones.

1. Wash hands frequently and thoroughly

Handwashing remains the most effective way to prevent infection. Aim for at least 20 seconds, removing rings and scrubbing between fingers, the back of hands, wrists, and forearms. Rinse well and dry with a disposable towel. This protects colleagues and prevents contaminating work surfaces. Hand sanitizer is helpful but no substitute for soap and water.

2. Disinfect your workspace regularly

The virus can linger on surfaces for days, so thorough cleaning is key. Use multi-surface wipes or solutions with alcohol, hydrogen peroxide, or diluted bleach. Wipe down your chair, armrests, mouse, keyboard, and daily-use items. Clean your station daily, either morning or evening.

3. Maintain your masks properly

Masks are essential for protection. Dispose of single-use masks after 4 hours; never reuse without discarding. Wash fabric masks daily at 60°C. Keep spares to rotate throughout the day. Employers may mandate masks, so always have backups.

4. Maintain distance and avoid physical contact

Keeping at least 1 meter from others significantly reduces droplet transmission, as proven by studies. Skip handshakes, hugs, or kisses—avoid all unnecessary contact during a pandemic.
