How Many Hours of Exercise Boost Thinking Skills in Older Adults? Study Reveals

Research shows physical training can sharpen cognitive skills, but how much is enough? A comprehensive review analyzed studies where older adults trained for at least four weeks, comparing their thinking and memory test scores to non-exercisers. Key finding: At least 52 hours of exercise over about six months led to measurable improvements. Those averaging 34 hours in the same period saw no gains. Weekly exercise volume showed no link to cognitive benefits.

This analysis drew from 98 randomized controlled trials with 11,061 participants, average age 73. Of these, 59% were healthy adults, 26% had mild cognitive impairment, and 15% had dementia. Notably, 58% weren't regular exercisers beforehand.
