For years, media has promoted thin female bodies as the pinnacle of attractiveness. Yet, new research indicates women's ideal female figure has shifted toward a "thin and firm" standard, emphasizing muscle tone.
Researchers analyzed Miss USA winners from 1999 to 2013, focusing on swimsuit photos judged primarily on appearance and alignment with beauty ideals. They presented these images to 78 women, who rated the winners on muscularity, thinness, and attractiveness. The findings? Recent victors embody not just thinness but increasing muscularity over the past 15 years.
In a follow-up study, 64 women viewed pairs of images featuring 14 women. Each pair was identical except one had muscle definition digitally removed, creating a "just thin" version versus a "thin and muscular" one. Rated individually, both were equally appealing. But side-by-side, the muscular versions were deemed more attractive.
