Loss of Smell for Peppermint and Coconut Oil: A Potential COVID-19 Warning Sign from Recent Study

Loss of smell and/or taste remains one of the hallmark symptoms of COVID-19 infection. Difficulty detecting familiar scents can be a clear indicator.

Cough and fever are well-known COVID-19 symptoms, but sudden loss of smell or taste warrants immediate attention. A recent small-scale study from India suggests that impaired detection of specific scents may signal infection.

Research Overview

The study included 84 participants: 49 asymptomatic COVID-19 patients and 35 healthy controls. Conducted by experts at the National Agri-Food Biotechnology Institute in Mohali and the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research in Chandigarh, it examined whether reduced smell detection serves as an early infection warning.

Researchers tested five everyday scents familiar to the Indian population: coconut oil, fennel, garlic, peppermint, and cardamom.

Coconut Oil and Peppermint Challenges

Results showed COVID-19 patients struggled most with coconut oil and peppermint. Approximately 25% could not detect peppermint, while 21% had trouble identifying coconut oil. Notably, 6% of patients recognized none of the five scents. Healthy participants identified nearly all scents accurately, with only occasional misses.

Additional research is needed to understand why these specific scents are affected in COVID-19 patients.
