Eliminate Dust Mites from Your Home: Expert Tips for Lasting Allergy Relief

Dust mite allergies are among the most common, often intensifying in fall. These proven strategies will help you create a truly mite-free home and ease symptoms effectively.

Understanding House Dust Mites

Dust mites are tiny arachnids that feed on human and pet skin flakes. They thrive in warm rooms (20-30°C) with high humidity (80%), favoring textiles like pillows, bedding, mattresses, and carpets.

The Living Room

  • Dust mites flourish in textiles, including carpets and rugs. Switch to smooth, hard flooring to deny them a foothold.
  • Opt for painted walls over wallpaper, where mites often hide. For patterned designs, choose vinyl alternatives.
  • Select furniture with sleek, smooth surfaces that's simple to wipe down. Always dust with a damp cloth, not a dry feather duster.

The Bedroom

  • Ventilate generously to keep temperatures below 18°C and humidity under 60%. Ditch any humidifiers right away.
  • Choose a synthetic mattress with an anti-allergen encasement and a 60°C-washable molton underlay.
  • Wash bedding and pillows at least four times yearly at 40°C (check labels first). Air them out outdoors otherwise.
  • Launder bed linens weekly at 60°C or higher.
  • Keep the laundry basket in another room.
  • Use a fully enclosed wardrobe.
