How to Strengthen Your Immunity and Stay Healthy This Winter

Why are we more prone to illness in winter, and how can you fight back?

Why does winter increase our risk of getting sick? From constant sniffles and yet another cold to being sidelined by the flu, winter hits harder. Lowered immunity makes us vulnerable to bacteria and viruses. We crowd together indoors, pack public transport during cold, wet weather, and huddle inside. The chill hampers your mucous membranes, while viruses survive longer in the cold, making infections easier to catch.

A strong immune system thrives on healthy habits. Arm yourself against winter bugs and reduce colds and flu with these practical tips:

1. Prioritize sleep
Quality sleep fuels your day and fortifies defenses. It sharpens your immune system's memory, spotting threats early for a swift response.

2. Eat nutrient-rich foods
Vegetables, fruits, dairy, and whole grains deliver vital vitamins and minerals. Focus on vitamins C and D in winter, plus healthy fats from nuts, avocado, or oily fish.

3. Maintain good hygiene
Viruses lurk on doorknobs, phones, keyboards, and ATMs. Wash hands regularly to block pathogens.

4. Get regular exercise
30 minutes of daily vigorous activity boosts immunity. Bike instead of drive, or walk during breaks.

5. Avoid chronic stress
Stress weakens immunity. Laughing and relaxing improve mood and defenses alike.

6. Stay hydrated
Proper fluids support immunity by flushing waste. Drink 1.5 to 2 liters of water or tea daily.
