We blink automatically throughout the day, with our brains timing each one to minimize missed visual information. Remarkably, this adds up to about 6 seconds of closed eyes per minute.
Specsavers optometrist Simone Stad explains: 'Blinking protects your eyes while spreading tear fluid across the surface and clearing away debris. Blinking less often reduces tear renewal, increasing risks of dry eyes and irritation.'
Three Types of Blinks
Reflex blinks protect against sudden visual stimuli, loud noises, or touches.
Spontaneous blinks keep eyes moist and clean without conscious effort.
Intentional blinks are deliberate, such as winking.
Factors Influencing Blink Rate
Blink frequency increases with age—babies may blink just twice per minute, while seniors average 40 times. This compensates for thinning fat layers around the eyes, influenced by medications, living conditions, or dry air, which prompts more blinks to maintain moisture. Concentration on tasks reduces blinking.
