Consider reading this on your feet. A rigorous meta-analysis shows that replacing six hours of sitting with standing each day can prevent weight gain and support meaningful fat loss.
Prolonged sitting fuels the obesity epidemic and raises risks for cardiovascular disease and diabetes. Europeans average up to seven hours seated daily, even among the physically active. This study pooled data from 46 trials involving 1,184 participants—average age 33, 60% male, BMI 24 kg/m², weight 65 kg—to compare calorie burn between standing and sitting.
Standing burns 0.15 kcal more per minute than sitting. For a 65 kg person, standing for six hours daily adds 54 kcal burned. Without extra eating, that's 2.5 kg lost yearly—or 10 kg over four years.
The lead researcher explains: "Beyond higher calorie burn, standing engages more muscles, cutting risks for heart attacks, strokes, and diabetes—benefits that extend well past weight management."
