Public health researchers at San Diego State University tested this idea at San Diego International Airport, exploring whether simple signs could motivate travelers to choose stairs over escalators. Over 10 non-consecutive days, they placed one of five signs at the base of an escalator or near an elevator.
The signs read:
– “Reserve the escalator for those who need it.”
– “Don't waste time, lose weight. Use the stairs.”
– “Don't waste your time, minimize your waistline. Use the stairs.”
– “You get more stares when you use the stairs.”
– “If you want to feel younger, act younger. Go for it! Use the stairs.”
On alternate days, no signs appeared. The team counted stair and escalator users, then interviewed stair-climbers about their health history and activity levels. Key finding: signs roughly doubled stair use versus no-sign days, boosting activity among both regular exercisers and those who'd never exercised before, per the researchers.
