After a long, hectic day, tackling the dishes is often the last thing on your mind. Yet, this everyday chore offers unexpected advantages.
Researchers from Florida State University conducted a small-scale study with two groups of students washing dishes. One group first read a passage emphasizing the importance of simply getting the job done. The other was instructed to focus mindfully on the warmth of the water, the scent of the soap, and the contours of the dishes.
Mindful Dishwashing
As you might guess, the mindful group experienced reduced nervousness and heightened inspiration. Since the dishes need washing anyway, why not make the most of it? Starting with a positive mindset—that it's not so bad—can help.
These routine moments naturally cultivate mindfulness, even if you're unaware of it.
