Preference Assessment
Participants completed a questionnaire to reveal their preferences for low-fat or low-carbohydrate diets.

One group selected their preferred diet (with option to adjust), while another was randomly assigned one.
Weight Loss Results
Surprisingly, those assigned a diet lost more weight. Researchers had anticipated self-selection would motivate better adherence, but evidence suggests people may overeat favorites or follow external guidance more strictly.
