DIY Natural Respiratory Balm: Homemade Vicks Alternative for Colds and Flu

Respiratory infections can strike quickly, especially during temperature shifts when immunity is low. As someone who's relied on natural remedies for years, I've developed this simple DIY balm—a natural alternative to Vicks—that supports respiratory health using time-tested essential oils and coconut oil.

Ingredients

– 2 tablespoons coconut oil
– 5 drops nutmeg essential oil
– 2 drops cinnamon essential oil
– 10 drops eucalyptus essential oil
– 10 drops ginger essential oil
– 3 drops rosemary essential oil
– Sterilized glass jar or bottle

If you lack nutmeg, cinnamon, or ginger oils, substitute with 10 drops lemon and 7 drops eucalyptus essential oil. At warmer temperatures, the mixture stays soft as an oil for massage—the benefits remain unchanged.

How to Make Your Natural Respiratory Balm

1. Sterilize the glass jar: Wash thoroughly, boil for 5 minutes, remove with a clean fork, and dry upside down on a clean towel.
2. Combine essential oils in the jar, gently rolling between palms to mix (avoid shaking).
3. Add coconut oil, seal, and roll again. Refrigerate to solidify for easy application.

Suffering from colds or flu? This homemade balm is my go-to natural remedy. I source organic essential oils from a trusted supplier (no affiliate link—just a recommendation based on quality).

Nutmeg Essential Oil

Beyond its culinary use for enhancing potato dishes, nutmeg oil shines in aromatherapy for arthritis, poor circulation, muscle and rheumatic pain, infections, digestive issues, stress, and fatigue.

Cinnamon Essential Oil

One of the world's oldest remedies, cinnamon supports physical and mental health. Its antiviral and antibacterial properties boost immunity, making it ideal against flu and colds.

Eucalyptus Essential Oil

With its fresh, invigorating scent, eucalyptus disinfects and clears respiratory issues, inflammation, and infections. Studies confirm its efficacy for colds and breathing support.

Ginger Essential Oil

Ginger's spicy profile delivers powerful relief for pain, inflammation, flu, colds, and migraines—essential for this respiratory balm.

Rosemary Essential Oil

Historically prized by Romans for mental clarity, rosemary aids coughs, colds, fatigue, joint pain, and stress in modern aromatherapy.

Benefits of Coconut Oil

Coconut oil's antibacterial properties make it a staple in natural remedies. It's gentle on skin, absorbs well, and enhances the balm's healing effects.

I prefer crafting my own remedies to avoid synthetic chemicals. Nature offers potent solutions for flu and respiratory woes. Try this DIY balm and share your results!
