Do you need to shower every day? It's a great question. While the answer might seem obvious, it's not so straightforward.
For 4 out of 5 French people, a daily shower feels essential. But is it the only way to stay clean? And do you always need soap?
Experts agree: adapt your shower frequency to the climate and your daily activities.

Dermatologists warn that over-washing can harm your skin. Maud Bezier, a dermatologist, explains: "Soap strips the skin and alters the hydrolipidic film on the epidermis. Aggressive washing weakens the skin, leading to dryness—especially for those prone to dry skin," she notes in an LCI article.
That said, experts unanimously recommend using soap over skipping it entirely.
What about children? The answer might surprise you.
Dermatologist Catherine Ghouti points out that water alone doesn't remove dead epidermal cells or excess sebum—the natural oils coating your skin.
While preserving the skin's protective hydrolipidic film is key, failing to slough off daily buildup can cause skin damage.
Opt for gentle options like soap-free shower gels, surgras soaps, or dermatological bars.
For a natural alternative, whip up your own moisturizing shower gel. It's simple and uses skin-friendly ingredients. Find out how here.
You can also make mild soap without soda, as explained here.
Even then, watch for dryness from hot or hard (calcareous) water. "Too hot or calcareous water aggravates the issue," confirms Maud Bezier.
Hair faces similar challenges—frequent washing strips natural oils, but water alone falls short. "Washing hair with just water won't remove keratin residues, sebum, and debris," says Maud Bezier.
Many skip chemical shampoos, turning to apple cider vinegar and baking soda instead.
