A stuffy nose in babies isn't typically serious, but clearing it quickly helps prevent ear infections (otitis media).
I've used this effective, natural technique recommended by my children's pediatrician to unclog my newborns' noses safely at home.
The key is using saline solution. Here's how:
1. Wash your hands thoroughly.
2. Open two single-use saline pipettes and prepare a clean handkerchief.
3. Lay your baby on their side.
4. Gently hold your baby's head steady with one hand.
5. With the other hand, carefully insert the tip of the saline pipette into the upper nostril.
6. Firmly squeeze the pipette to release the saline into the nostril.
7. Use the handkerchief to wipe any liquid from the lower nostril.
8. Turn your baby to the other side.
9. Repeat with the second pipette in the other nostril.
Your baby's nose is now clear—simple, quick, and effective!
This reduces the risk of ear infections, and with consistent use, colds often resolve in 2-3 days. Repeat 3-4 times daily during the cold.
No need for medications that may be ineffective or risky. It works for babies from 1 week old and up.
Don't be surprised if they cry—babies dislike nasal clearing, but afterward, they breathe easier, sleep better, and nurse more comfortably.
This method flushes out mucus from the nose and throat, preventing it from entering the Eustachian tubes. Clearing it reduces infection risk and stops colds from progressing to otitis.
Saline solution is available online or in pharmacies. You can also use infant-safe saline spray, manual aspirators, or electric ones if preferred.
For older children able to blow their nose, no aspirator is needed.
If the cold lasts beyond 2-3 days, or if your baby seems unusually tired or has a fever, consult your doctor immediately.
