Scientists say they have developed an AIDS vaccine for the first time that greatly reduces the risk of contracting HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus).
The vaccine is a combination of two vaccines that already existed. Separately, the vaccines proved ineffective, but when the two are combined, the risk of contracting the disease is reduced by 31 percent †
The study was conducted by the US military and the Thai Ministry of Health. In total, more than 16,000 people between the ages of 18 and 30 volunteered in Thailand.
